James H Loughridge
- Corporal
James was wounded in the leg as a member of the 136th PA during the Battle of Fredericksburg. He recovered and later joined the 5th NYHA and fought in the Battle of Cedar Creek as an infantry man during Grant's overland campaign of 1864. A number of the 'Heavy' units were pulled out fo the forts and turned into infantry. They were know as the 'Red Legged Infantry' due to their wearing pants with the red strip down the side for artillery.

Taken prisoner and died in Andersonville (Camp Sumpter) where he is buried in grave 8806 in Section H.

Andersonville records list his Company as B or D. The soldier record on the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors site at www.itd.nps.gov lists his Company as C or L.

Alternate spellings of the surname on these records include:
Vanclack, Van Kleck, and Van Kluck (two narrow handwritten 'E's next to each other could look like a 'U' in some handwriting).

From Feb 23, 1864-July 19, 1865, Nathan Beisel served in Co. D of the 'Jackson Heavy.' He contracted small pox while at Harper's Ferry. He recovered, and returned to Luzerne County, Pa.

James McNally

James McNally is my gt-grandfather. Joined 8th U.S. Infantry, Co. F for 5 year enlistment in September 1858 at the age of 15. Captured in 1861 in San Antonio, TX, spent 2 years in prison camp. Released, returned to NY and during March 1864 joined the 5th NY Heavy Artillery acting as Infantry. Severely wounded in left wrist at Battle of Piedmont, Va., June 5, 1864. Captured on field of battle and marched to Confederate Hospital in New Hope Methodist Church, New Hope, a little over a miles distance. Left arm amputated about 4 inches below the elbow. Sent by cattle car to Camp Sumter (Andersonville). Kept in Hospital at prison camp. Released after about four months and sent home. Returned to NY, eventually moving to Norfolk, VA, Washington DC and ending in Hollywood, Maryland. Two wives and 12 children. Died at the age of 69 in 1912. Buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Sec. 17, Grave No. 18134, Arlington, VA.
